Why buy a Golf?

The Volkswagen Golf is a very popular car, from the very first generation in 1974 to the current – every Golf model has been a huge success. If like me you cannot afford a new Golf then a used one might be the next best thing. I’ve been looking for a Volkswagen Golf in Somersetfor a couple of weekends and test driven a couple too.Even as a used car the Golf is not cheap and definitely not a “cheap buy”. The Golf is the class leader in the small hatchback sector, models like the Focus have come close by are still far from throwing the Golf off from the 1st step. I have many friends who have bought Golfs and not a single one of them has regretted it.

Since 1992 there have been four Golf models launched, the MK3 in 1992, the MK4 in 1998, the MK5 in 2004 and the current MK 6 in 2009. With my budget of £6,000 I can get a 2006 MK5 1.6 litre SE FSI with around 50,000 miles on the clock. If I get the diesel model then I can get the best fuel economy, it can do 62.8 miles to the gallon. The MK5 also has a 5 star NCAP safety rating – perfect for the family.

I’m quite tempted to get a high performance model, they are cheaper than the diesel and are much faster! The reason they are cheaper is because they cost more to run and not everyone can get insured on them. Maybe I can convince the other half?

When buying a Golf you have to be very careful, as there is no such things as a “cheap Golf”, one that appear cheap often have major faults or a dodgy history. Make sure you do a full HPI check and examine the paper work carefully.
